This is fucking disgusting. I spit in the direction of any person who says we don’t live in a rape culture because these numbers speak volumes.
Statistics like this piss me off. I will not believe that 80% of college educated men think this. “Its a study”., of how many people? And where was it taken place because I call bull shit. No HUMAN with half an ounce of dignity would think this.
Those are valid questions that I don’t know the answers to, since I neither own nor have I read the book these are taken from.
I must be cynical or something though, because I actually have little faith in the majority of the human race. Especially when it comes to things like this. Even intelligent people can be asshole misogynists. Rape is a lot more common than people think. It’s not just something that happens on tv. Or in books or media. And it’s not so cut and dry as it might seem.
I think I saw another post on tumblr that went into more depth about these statistics. One of the points brought up was alcohol. And that consent when under the influence is not consent at all. That getting a girl drunk to have sex with her, when she otherwise would not want to have sex — is rape. Or husbands who force their wives to have sex. Or, heck, dudes who think they are entitled to have women because they’re a “nice guy” even. That, if a girl accepts their friendship or an offer for dinner…that they “owe” them.
You’re a good person. One of my favorite people. And I’m glad you feel that no decent human being would think the things listed up there.
But I think we live in a very good area. And that we are kind of lucky. And that good people surround themselves with good people…and probably aren’t as exposed to the kind of bad shit that happens.
But shit like this still happens here. It just doesn’t make the news.
Idk. My dad’s a prosecutor. He personally doesn’t deal with these cases now (he prosecutes different cases), but his coworkers do.
Women get abducted from parking lots. Raped on trails. Attacked at night. It can happen anywhere at anytime. And it’s not just one or two guys doing it. It’s a sickening amount. And these are only the reported cases.
I’m personally hoping that most of the guys who think like this are too cowardly to act, and too disgusting (both inside and out) to ever actually get a girl and exercise any sort of power over her.
I personally would much rather be too suspicious than abducted, raped, and brutalized.
Sorry if my response is patronizing. The validity of statistics is usually something I’m really skeptical about, but I guess it just didn’t cross my mind here.
And “asking to be raped” is just innocuous enough that I can believe that 80% of men can think that. Because they probably think it’s funny to say. Probably say it as a joke or bitterly or whatever. They may not think they mean it, but everytime something like that is said or thought, it becomes a little more internalized…

Amon wouldn’t just let me die…
He said he wouldn’t…
He said he was saving me for last…
This time when Korra looked up, Amon was not there. He had retreated into the darkness of the zeppelin and left her falling. For some reason, his absence was not comforting- the opposite, in fact.
The aircraft was growing smaller, and the force of gravity weighed heavy on the Avatar’s body.
Korra was going to die.
“Grab my hand!”
Or not.
His calculations were as accurate as always. Just as things were looking dire for the Avatar, Lin swooped in and snatched her from her deadly decline, Korra clinging to the older woman for dear life. They crashed into the stands, near where Mako and Bolin now stood nervously. Both brothers immediately crushed Korra in their arms, and Korra allowed herself to melt into the momentary comfort of the embrace of her two dearest friends. Their embrace was so caring it almost hurt. Why did she feel so sad?
As shards of the glass ceiling crumbled into the water below and waterbending officials (how nice of Tarrlok to show up after everything went to shit) extinguished the fires, the three of them sat like that. Korra spared a glance at Bolin’s face- he was crying silently.
“What are we going to do now?” he murmured.
Korra was too emotionally and physically drained to respond. She wanted to say they could stay with her on Air-temple island, but she was just too beat to make that kind of commitment. She’d come back tomorrow, perhaps, when she had Tenzin’s permission- there he was now, striding towards them with great theatrical appeal, probably due to the fact that Tenzin always airbended unintentionally when he was upset, and it always whipped his loose, vibrant garments around dramatically.
“Korra,” he said, helping her to her feet. “Korra, are you OK?”
“He got away again,” Korra said with emotionless disappointment. Lin was leading the brothers off towards the undamaged part of the building where they slept.“That’s not the point, Korra, are you ok?”
Korra looked at Tenzin. Really looked at him.
“He didn’t take my bending away-“
“That’s not what I mean, Korra. I don’t want to know if the Avatar is ok. I want to know if you’re ok.”
Oh man! I really like this! I love how you added Korra’s talk with Tenzin in. And all the interaction she had with Asami. I loved it. They really seemed to click and it was adorable and also kind of heartwrenching when things got a little more serious.
I love how you’re incorporating the chakras, too. The letting go bit was excellent. :D
Will Korra eventually confide in Asami? I kind of hope so. I also imagine once Asami finds out about the kiss Korra and Mako shared, and about Korra liking Mako, that she will react a little differently in your fic, lol.
I also imagine Tenzin will freak out with his new knowledge…like, I feel like he might try to prevent Korra from trying to fight against the equalists or something. Or be very upset about it. Trying to shield her after the fact or something.
Idk.

Um, no, speak for yourself. I’m totally Lara when I play Tomb Raider.

Because G-d forbid a woman character be naturally confident! G-d forbid a woman explorer travel the world and steal priceless relics just because she thinks it’s a fun way to spend her Saturday night! We can’t have that, so better break her down and give her a tragic backstory.
Also, what happens if we suck at protecting Lara? Does the player have to watch her get raped? That doesn’t sound traumatizing at all!
